The top 10 apps to download immediately if you want to go vegan

This year, veganism is set to go mainstream (so says The Economist). If you’re one of the hundreds of thousands who took the Veganuary pledge to go vegan for Veganuary, we’re here to make the challenge even easier.

Take the guesswork out of going vegan, and make the transition easier with our picks for the top 10 apps to help you go vegan.

gonutss

This free app is known as the “Vegan Translator.” Need help veganizing a recipe? gonutss — which has received praise from PETA, Veganuary and more — has you covered. Simply search non-vegan recipes and Gonutss finds cruelty-free alternative(s). The app also allows you to search with allergens, non-GMOS, tree nuts, and beyond to make your perfect vegan eats. Gonutss is loaded with a Veganpedia, recipes, a magic list of products, and so much more. We’re sure you’ll go nuts over this app!

21-Day Vegan Kickstart

21-Day Vegan Kickstart is another free app brought to you by the Physicians Committee and is jam-packed with goodies including recipes (from all over the world) and expert advice on nutrition from doctors. Download this app and you’ll learn about the health benefits of a plant-based diet as well as get a weekly grocery list, daily meal plans, recipes with step-by-step instructions and more.

Vegaholic

Who doesn’t love a glass of wine or a few drinks out with friends on the weekend? After all, isn’t booze made of fermented fruit and vegetables – a seemingly safe bet? Sad news: sometimes it’s not. In fact, wine and beer can be filtered with isinglas (that’s fish guts), egg whites and more. Gross. However, Vegaholic (created by the lovely folks at Barnivore) take the guess work out of figuring out what drinks are vegan or not. Barnivore’s database has nearly 43,000 beers, wines, and spirits in their Vegaholic directory to make it easier to find vegan wine and beer. The app is user-friendly, easy to use, and only 99 cents to download.

CodeCheck

If you want to know more about products at the grocery store, download the free CodeCheck and start scanning bar codes. CodeCheck reports whether what you’re holding is healthy and sustainable — and if it’s not, it offers alternative products to try. While it isn’t specifically a vegan app, we dig it for the resource it provides, like whether or not a product is vegan and ethically sourced.

Bunny Free

Brought to you by PETA, Bunny Free is a free app that lets you know whether or not a company tests on animals (and if they do, what kind of testing it is). Putting PETA’s cruelty-free shopping guide in the palm of your hand, it’s updated regularly and is a no-brainer when taking your cruelty-free, vegan life beyond your plate and into places like your cosmetic bag.

Forks Over Knives

Wait, isn’t this a film? Yes, yes it is. Brought to you by the same folks who created the award-winning Forks Over Knives film, Forks Over Knives app features more than 400 recipes that are whole food and plant based. Coming in at $4.99 for the download, this incredible app offers grocery lists, step-by-step recipes, tips on living a plant-based life plus contributions from more than 50 of the world’s top chefs.

Veganagogo

Travel to foreign countries where English isn’t the main language? Chock up $2.99 and download Veganagogo. It makes it easy to communicate your vegan life into 50 languages. They even tapped into native speakers for the translations, so you’re in good, vegan hands. Confidently fire up the app and let it do the talking for you.

Is It Vegan?

Is It Vegan? takes the guesswork out of popular supermarket finds. Download Is It Vegan? and start scanning bar codes (or enter them in, whatever makes you happy) and the app does the heavy lifting, letting you know on a scale of red (stop, not vegan!) to green (definitely vegan). It’s free with some ads, but hey, it’s a good app to help you make it easy to shop vegan. Side note: if you want even more help, be sure to follow ShopVeganLV over on Instagram. It highlights the best vegan products you can find in shops in Las Vegas and online.

Vegan Amino

Make friends in the vegan community … around the world with the all-inclusive community created by Vegan Amino. If you are looking for a friendly and engaging vegan network, you’ll find it here. Chat with other vegans, share recipes, lifestyle hacks, stay up-to-date on the latest vegan news and trends and more with this free app.

VeganXpress

VeganXpress is a must for all vegans when you’re starving. In a pinch, VeganXpress swoops in to save you by letting you know vegan options at fast food restaurants (in case there isn’t a Carls Jr. nearby). It’s $1.99 and works online and off.

Bonus: Happy Cow

This crowd-sourced app provides info on restaurants and groceries that are vegetarian and vegan/vegan-friendly With a whopping 180 countries it serves, Happy Cow is a fantastic resource when you’re in a new location and our guides can’t cover you. Take note — because it’s user-generated, sometimes info can be out-of-date so make sure the spot still exists and is open before you trek there.
